What You will Learn: Year 8 | Year 9
Art
The following points are covered in Art:
- Pupils will learn about the rules of portraiture and develop a self-portrait based on the work of Picasso and African masks.
Assessment:
Students are assessed at the End-of-Term using National Curriculum levels. Photographic records of each pupils’ work are kept for reference.

Design & Technology
The following points are covered in Design Technology:
- Health & Safety. An introduction to working in a Design and Technology environment. Teachers show students how to use tools and equipment in a correct manner.
- Students are given a variety of tasks on the theme of measurement. For e.g. measuring ingredients out accurately.
Assessment:
This is assessed by teachers observing individual students using tools and equipment. Students complete a worksheet on Health & Safety issues. At the end of the module students prototypes are assessed and graded.

Drama
The following area is covered in Drama:
- Students are either, looking at how scripts are developed and written (including how to recognise the features of a play script) using Play script starters and reading Bungle Gang plays, or working on an extended project on listening and co-operative skills: “Darkwood Manor”, which explores the mystery genre.
Assessment:
Assessment is in the form of ongoing observation by the teacher.

English
The following points are covered in English:
- To study and give a personal response to a range of poems.
- To recognise the use of poetic techniques e.g. simile, metaphor.
- To discuss the effect created by the use of poetic techniques.
Assessment:
Reading Assessment - Journey to a poem. Students read and respond to a poem and a piece of autobiographical writing. Demonstrating understanding and comment on the writer’s use of language.

Enquiry Skills
The following points are covered in Enquiry Skills:
- Be able to produce an interactive presentation for a specific audience on the subject of the Commonwealth
- Identify different information sources, describing the advantages and disadvantages of each. Be able to check that this information is accurate by comparing it with another source.
- Use a variety of strategies and learning styles to solve a number of complex problems as a member of a team.
Assessment:
This is assessed in the following ways: Using national curriculum ICT levels as part of the Commonwealth project. Students Create a bibliography as part of the Commonwealth project. Team work skills are assessed through the “Get me out of here” project.

- How do we find places in an atlas?
- What is the European Union and where are the countries of Europe?
Assessment:
These are assessed in the following ways: Through graded homeworks and Map work.

- Henry II and Thomas Becket?
- The Magna Carta
- The Peasent's Revolt
- The Crusades
Assessment:
Students are assessed in the following ways: Task are assessed through internet research and written work in class, extended writing, and research the topics using books.

The following points are covered in Languages:
- Students should be able to give a short talk in a foreign language on the aspect of their work.
- On beginning the second language, learn some facts about the country and its people.
Assessment:
Assessment takes various forms including evidence in exercise books of written tasks and oral presentations in class.

Mathematics
The following areas are covered in Mathematics:
Set 1
- Algebra: Draw a straight line graph from its equation.
- Shape Space and Measure: Understand and use the equivalence of fraction, decimal and percentages.
- Number: Divide a quantity into a given ratio.
Set 2
- Number: Know and use the order of operation including brackets.
- Number: Recognise equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Algebra: Solve word problems involving Algebra
Set 3
- Handling Data: Plan how to collect and organise small sets of data.
- Number: Recognise the equivalence of fractions, decimals and percentages.
- Shape, Space and Measure: convert one metric unit to another.
Assessment:
Students knowledge of the above points is tested through End-of-Unit tests..

Music
The following points are covered in Music:
- Students will learn how rhythm is notated in Music.
- Students will be able to perform rhythms accurately and recognise different rhythm patterns by ear.
- Students will develop their keyboard skills.
Assessment:
These are assessed through performance on percussion instruments and an oral test.

Physical Education
The following points are covered in Physical Education:
- Students should understand the four strands of the National Curriculum for assessment. Used by teacher when displaying learning outcomes on the board at the start of lessons. These strands are; Acquiring and developing skills, Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas, Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health and Evaluating and improving performance.
- To be able to apply the these four strands in Games / Athletics / Dance / Gymnastics / Swimming in foundation course.
- Students should be able to participate in Inter-Form competitions.
Assessment:
These are assessed by teacher questioning and target setting by pupils using displayed levels in changing rooms and teaching spaces. Teacher levelling using Department Scheme of Work and QCA core tasks. House points are awarded to students participating in competitions.

- Students are able to say how and why people of different faiths celebrate Festivals of Light.

Assessment is in the form of an assignment titled 'Festivals of Light'.
