English Language


What is English Language?

On the A Level English Language course you will learn how to analyse a range of different types of texts using linguistic methods. You will explore language in use and how language varies in different contexts. You will also investigate a chosen topic of interest and produce a piece of original writing.

The topics you will study on the A Level English Language course will include: textual variation and representation, children's language development, and language diversity and change.

 

 

Why Study English Language?

If you are looking for a course that will give you so many options/opportunities, then this is the course for you! Do you want to go to University? Do you want to go into the world of work? With this qualification so many doors will be opened for you.

This course will allow you to:

  • Develop methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use.
  • Understand the roles of purposes, audiences and contexts and the impact of these pressures upon language production and reception.
  • Use linguistic methods to analyse and investigate a variety of extracts taken from everyday sources.

 

 

What Will I Learn?

At AS, you will be expected to:

  • Analyse how the variety and meaning of language is influenced by context and purpose.
  • demonstrate your expertise and understanding of the English language through a creative response.

Assessment is by external examination.

At A2, you will be expected to:

  • analyse how and why language changes using associated terminology
  • investigate topical language issues
  • explore how children acquire language
  • analyse your own use of language through a variety of creative responses.

Assessment is by external examination and coursework.

 

What Do I Need to Study English Language?

Grade B or above in GCSE English Language or English Literature.
