80th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino
One of our Year 8 students, Hubert, had the opportunity last month to participate in the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. Individuals from around the world gathered to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers, held at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Cassino, Italy. This event marked the passage of eighty years since the conclusion of the gruelling four-month-long struggle at Monte Cassino. The commemoration ceremony included a service of remembrance, prayers, and wreath-laying. Participants included war veterans, government and military representatives, private individuals, guests, and scout groups from all over the world. For Hubert and all the scouts participating in the celebration, it was an invaluable history lesson. They had the unique opportunity to wear uniforms similar to those of General Anders’ army and to sing the war song “Red Poppies at Monte Cassino” in unison with others.
