Discover Materials Winter Event

Last term, Ms James’ Engineering classes in Years 9 and 10 recently had the opportunity to participate in the Discover Materials Winter Event. This involved watching live online events, looking at materials under a microscope with Dr Mark Coleman, learning about the power of spider silk with Dr Chris Holland and we discovered all the materials that can be found in a mobile phone with Marty Jopson (resident scientist on BBC One’s ‘The One Show’).
As part of the event, the students were set a challenge to think about the environmental impact of festive decorations and create a colourful festive decoration out of sustainable, reused, and recycled materials found around the house and/or garden. This was a National Competition, and we were thrilled to discover that one of our Year 9 students, Josh, was one of the winners. His paper tree design can be seen on the opposite page – well done Josh!
