PSHE lessons

Personal, Social and Health Education at Trinity aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn key life skills which will enable them to make well informed choices around their lifestyle, safety and relationships.

The focus this term has been ‘Keeping Safe’, with each year group learning age appropriate content regarding risks that exist in life and society and the risks around using drugs and alcohol.

In Year 7 we began by educating students on ensuring their personal safety outside of home and school. Students moved on to learn about different types of bullying and how to respond to it effectively, learning about legal and illegal drugs and methods on how to resist peer pressure.

Year 8 built on their understanding of bullying to consider the impact on victims and the characteristics of bullies. They were educated on homophobia and how this form of bullying affects individuals along with guidance on how to seek support. Students then learned about the dangers of ‘sexting’, ways that young people can be exploited and how to cope with loss and bereavement.

Year 9 students developed their understanding of exploitation by learning about county lines and child sexual exploitation. They were also taught about extremism and how young people can be radicalised. This is followed by lessons on how teenage relationship abuse can manifest, forced marriage and honour-based violence. Lessons on drugs and alcohol covered the issue of binge drinking, the classification of drugs and situations where the use of substances can expose young people to serious risks.

In Year 10 and 11 we invited guest speakers from the Brook (a sexual health agency for young people) to educate students about the realities and risks of sending, receiving and sharing youth produced sexual images. Year 11 then had an extensive course on sexual harassment including the legal definition and how it links to consent in relationships.

Every lesson in PSHE is linked to the Trinity Together Values as we strive to provide an environment in which every student feels safe and included. By helping them to be aware of the risks and challenges in society we can empower them to make choices which lead them towards positive life outcomes and help them access support when life presents difficulties.
