Y11 Visit with Jeffery Boakye
Some of our Year 11 stepped away from their daily revision schedules for an hour and a half as they attended an after-school workshop, at the University of Manchester, with the very talented Jeffrey Boakye-a high-profile author, broadcaster and teacher with a particular interest in issues surrounding race, masculinity, education and popular culture.
This workshop, around the idea of identity, proved so inspirational to our students, who left energised after listening and asking some fantastically insightful questions. Their quotes speak for themselves:
“Jeffrey Boakye offered some really interesting insights into life. It was a relaxed, fun and inspiring experience that has made me question the idea of identity and how we define ourselves.”
“I found the things he said on racism and toxic masculinity very interesting, and how important it is to be curious and question things, always.”
“It was especially nice to see such an energetic young person talking about certain topics like identity in such a positive light! It was incredibly engaging and also felt like we were in a conversation with rather than a talk by Jeffrey.”
“He really inspired me to question some preconceived ideas I had about race, and identity, and inspired me to try and initiate change, regardless of the scale.”
Thank you to Ms Jones for organising a memorable experience for the Y11 students and accompanying them to the event.
