Work Experience with the Grenadier Guards
French Horn player Elizabeth, in Year 11, recently returned from a fantastic and memorable work experience placement with the Grenadier Guards in London and tells us all about it here:
“It was really the most incredible time and I feel very lucky to have been able to experience an opportunity like this. The guards have really inspired and helped me with deciding on what I want to do after A-levels, with lots of support and encouragement to continue and grow my passion and love for playing. They showed me the multiple directions I could take to fit with other career paths, that easily go hand in hand with playing in the army, as well as the benefits playing in the band itself can have. They taught me the importance of my sight reading, as sometimes there isn’t always time with the band to rehearse pieces more than once, but also being able to adjust to sudden changes or challenges on the day.
They were all so kind and welcoming and taught me so much about the army, music and their lives. They offered me amazing opportunities that I am still shocked I got to experience, such as meeting the different bands, playing in a brass quintet, and visiting Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Furthermore, it has shown me that my hard work and resilience can lead me to amazing things like this. I loved every second of my time in London, and feel very blessed and fortunate to have so much support from them.”
