What is a Bursary?

A bursary is money that you, or your education or training provider, can use to pay for things like:

  • clothing, books and other equipment for your course
  • transport and lunch on days you study or train

What Types of Bursary are there?

  • Vulnerable Students (First Priority Group)
  • Discretionary Bursary (Second Priority)
  • Discretionary Bursary (Third Priority)

Eligibility

Vulnerable Students (First Priority)

  • in care—being a looked after children in the care of the Local Authority or foster parents
  • care leavers (after the age of 14)
  • those young people who receive Universal Credit in their own right
  • in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in their own right

Discretionary Bursary (Second Priority)

  • those with a household income of less than £16,149

Discretionary Bursary (Third Priority)

  • those with a household income of between £16,149 and £35,000
