Year 7 Cryptography Day
Our Head of Maths, Mr Scott, tells us more:
“At the end of last term, we welcomed Dr James Grime into school from the University of Cambridge and star of Youtube channel “Numberphile”. Dr Grime brought with him a real life Enigma machine which was used by the German army in the second world war. Dr Grime gave the students a fascinating presentation about the history of codes and codebreaking. He then gave a demonstration of the Enigma machine in action. After the presentation, students had the chance to become codebreakers themselves. They worked through various different types of codes and puzzles which all gave them clues to a famous historical figure; the father of computers and Manchester icon, Alan Turing. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a great deal about codes, codebreaking and some of the exciting careers linked to this area of Maths.”
