Y12 Chemistry Trip to Bradford University
From KS5 Science Co-ordinator, Dr. Garg:
“The Year 12 Chemistry students spent a day at the STEM laboratory at Bradford University carrying out practical work, which is an important aspect of their A Level Chemistry course. They worked in pairs to synthesise the painkiller Benzocaine and used several techniques, such as weighing by difference and refluxing, working with equipment they would not normally encounter in school laboratories.
The product was isolated using a filtration technique before the students tested the purity of their sample using infrared spectroscopy and measured its melting point. The behaviour of the students was excellent, and it was a really interesting and enjoyable day.”
